Shop local means eat local

There was a time when if you wanted a variety of dining choices all in the one place you were limited to the food court at the local shopping mall. You can still get some very nice offerings at the local mall and the refurbishment of the dining hall at Northlands has raised the bar to a higher level again but they pale in comparison to what we found in the central city.

Salt District

Not just code for its geographical positioning in Christchurch’s CBD (Saint Asaph, Lichfield and Tuam), SALT District is dubbed the city’s most alternative neighbourhood.
Salt district represents a new chapter in the development of Christchurch after the devastating 2011 earthquakes that destroyed major parts of the city. It shows an amount of planning and forethought being put into the rebuild and rather than shops and restaurants just appearing randomly as the city grows the move toward districts and dedicated areas is an exciting prospect.
The Little High Eatery

The Little High Eatery is a collection of eateries housed in an open space building in the 181 High Street Development. A similar concept to Ponsonby Central in Auckland, but with a local Christchurch feel, the space is designed to offer plenty of dining options in a more sophisticated manner than your typical food court.

Boxed Quarter

Boxed quarter is a precinct rather than a single building and has been described as “A melting pot of art, music, food and culture, a hub of innovation nestled in the city.”
On the ground floor you’ll find a range of eateries, from Thai, Vietnamese and Korean through to Italian and Japanese, bars and cafes sitting alongside music studios and gallery space. Look up at the above levels and you’ll find modern office spaces and the beautiful ARTpartment – a loft-style apartment able to be rented through air BnB.
The Welder

If you are looking for a bit of “you time” then The Welder may just be offering what you need. In the centre of this stunningly repurposed building is the indoor courtyard where you can access all the establishments. The welder is a unique health and wellbeing centre where you can pick up a coffee, a cold-pressed juice, tapas, a glass of wine, Japanese yakitori and other food offerings, but you can also indulge in a sauna, do a yoga class, floatation therapy or a massage, get your hair done, pick up a plant, take part in a plant-based cooking class and more. With so much to offer all in the one place it might sound a bit busy but the atmosphere and decore will soon have you calling this your new happy place.

Riverside Market

Riverside market is fast becoming the beating heart of this rejuvenated central city. Surrounded by a number of major fashion brands, along with beautiful gift and home-ware stores, are over 30 different food outlets, where the quality and variety will not disappoint.
All under one roof you have fresh produce and fish mongers to bakeries and local brewers, artisans of all sorts, vegan, and enough independent food stalls and restaurants to make this a place that warrants several trips
If these are some of the examples of what the city has in its future, as the rebuild continues and new and exciting places emerge, one day it may be known as The Edible Garden City. So get out and explore some of the fantastic eateries around Christchurch and remember dining out is shopping local too.

Creating the tour, “The day the earth shook”, about the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes was a journey not only down memory lane but into unchartered waters.

EWhen it comes to cooking at home sometimes simple is best. This little gem will impress, before or after a meal or any time of the day really, after all who doesn’t like chocolate. Easy, 3-ingredient raw chocolate! Naturally sweetened, customizable, super velvety and rich, and seriously good for you.

Bring the smells and memories of overseas into your kitchen. There is a saying that “we eat with our eyes”, if that is so then it could be argued that “we remember with our sense of smell”. It is undeniable that a smell can invoke memories. The smell of a certain perfume will remind us of our favorite Aunt, and the taste and smell of different foods can take you to far away places and distant memories. So lets create an eating tour at your place!!!

It was one of those light bulb moments, where all the seemingly unconnected holiday food experiences came together and started to form an idea. Wind back a few years to a trip we took through Italy, and a beautiful little stone walled town that I can no longer remember the name of. We discovered a small pizzeria down a quaint little back street. It only had room for two small tables and sold pizza by the slice, but it was some of the best pizza we had in all of Italy.
