The journey so far

It was one of those light bulb moments, where all the seemingly unconnected holiday food experiences came together and started to form an idea.

Wind back a few years to a trip we took through Italy, and a beautiful little stone walled town that I can no longer remember the name of. We discovered a small pizzeria down a quaint little back street. It only had room for two small tables and sold pizza by the slice, but it was some of the best pizza we had in all of Italy.

If only we had a guide to show us these places - we may have been able to experience more of the local fantastic foods.
Next we find ourselves in Phuket, shopping in what can only be described as a collection of stalls that are all under one roof. As we came out a man on a motorbike with a side cart pulled up and started cooking right there on the side of the street. Some of the stall holders came out and bought their lunch, now if the locals eat there it is usually pretty good so I bought the one dish he was making, a chicken noodle stir fry, and it was fantastic. So much so that I went back to get more but he had moved on to his next destination.

Then I’m at home watching one of those food writer/Chefs and he is in Morocco where he meets up with a local “Foodie” who is going to take him to a favourite place of his. This is a defining moment for me.

How do I find these amazing places when I go on my next holiday? Sure there are apps that rate restaurants, but what about the small places that don’t even have internet or the man on his motorbike who stops in the same place every day. The places only locals know about.

The conversation on the tv went on and as they talked about the food and the history of the town it occurred to me that it was not the place that was so important but the person showing it, they are the key. “Foodies Local Guides” was born, the concept anyway.

I wanted to share with others the excitement and joy that I felt when I discovered an amazing, authentic food place, and get to experience their amazing places as well, and this was going to be done with the help of local tour guides all over the world.
The next two years see the idea go from inside my head to out there in the world, it’s growing and evolving. Foodies Local Guides journey has only just begun………..

Creating the tour, “The day the earth shook”, about the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes was a journey not only down memory lane but into unchartered waters.

There was a time when if you wanted a variety of dining choices all in the one place you were limited to the food court at the local shopping mall. You can still get some very nice offerings at the local mall and the refurbishment of the dining hall at Northlands has raised the bar to a higher level again but they pale in comparison to what we found in the central city.

EWhen it comes to cooking at home sometimes simple is best. This little gem will impress, before or after a meal or any time of the day really, after all who doesn’t like chocolate. Easy, 3-ingredient raw chocolate! Naturally sweetened, customizable, super velvety and rich, and seriously good for you.

Bring the smells and memories of overseas into your kitchen. There is a saying that “we eat with our eyes”, if that is so then it could be argued that “we remember with our sense of smell”. It is undeniable that a smell can invoke memories. The smell of a certain perfume will remind us of our favorite Aunt, and the taste and smell of different foods can take you to far away places and distant memories. So lets create an eating tour at your place!!!
